AI engines now assemble carrier and forwarder shortlists from the websites they can read, and this benchmark measures how cleanly they read each operator's own site. In the Crane Index™ run measured on 1 September 2026, a machine could score 110 of the 176 British transport and logistics sites we approached; the rest could not be read at all. In a trade where the shortlist is the tender, an operator a machine cannot parse is left out of the assignment before a rate is ever quoted.

The buying pattern is already here. A container has to move from Felixstowe to the Midlands by the weekend, and the buyer describes the lane and the load to an assistant rather than working down a page of hauliers. A forwarder's own system does the same when it needs bonded capacity near a port. The machine does the sorting from what AI search can read on each operator's pages, hands the work to the operators it can describe with confidence, and the operator it skipped never learns the enquiry existed.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading transport and logistics organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 176 home pages we approached, 66 could not be read by a machine at all: 29 refused an automated reader, 30 gave it no response and 7 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 110 a machine could read, 2 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Agility at 73, with c2c next at 72. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 110 of the 176 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 2 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 110 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 19 to 73. 2 scored 70 or above, 27 sat between 55 and 69, 38 between 40 and 54, and 43 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 14, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The operators a machine could not even open

The plainest finding in this run is the group that never made it onto the scale. Beyond the 110 sites a machine could score, 66 could not be read at all: 29 turned the automated request away, 30 returned nothing an engine could use, and 7 serve a home page that does not exist until scripts have run. To a buyer's assistant those operators simply do not appear, however strong the fleet and the service behind the site, because a page a machine cannot open is a page it cannot put forward.

A field that sits low even where it can be read

The centre of the field sits low. Among the sites a machine could score, the median Crane Index score is 43 out of 100, and 81 sites sit below 55. The field is led by Agility at 73, and 2 sites cleared the Strong band of 70, so the room to lead this field for AI readability is wide open.

Reachable, yet unable to say who it is

The gap inside the scored group is the finding that marks this sector out. Transport and logistics sites score a median of 63 on Agent Readiness, whether an automated agent can reach and act on the site, yet only 14 on Brand Representation, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are. The cause is very much this industry's own. Haulage and forwarding groups grow by acquisition, so several liveries, legacy brands and divisional sites sit under one holding operation with no single consistent statement of who owns what, while the facts a buyer needs, the network, the capacity, the accreditations, often sit inside rate tools and portals that render only for a signed-in human. An assistant can open the door and watch the operation working, then fail to verify the name on it, so it forwards the load to the operator whose identity it can stand behind. This says nothing about the fleet or the service, only about how readable the structure is to software.

The shortest route back onto the shortlist

The fix is rarely a rebuild, because a reachable site that cannot state its identity is mostly a labelling problem, and labelling is the cheapest thing on a website to correct. Three moves lift a transport site fastest. Put valid structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on the pages that carry your lanes, modes and coverage, so a reader takes the service and the geography without having to run a quote tool. State one identity for the group, worded the same way across every division and acquired brand, so the engine finds one operator rather than five half-described ones. And write the facts a buyer weighs, the network, the capacity, the accreditations, in plain text on the page rather than behind a login, since a machine scores nothing it cannot see. This is ordinary technical SEO pointed at a machine reader rather than a search index.
