This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read the leading healthcare and pharmaceutical organisations' own websites, and whether the answers patients, clinicians and partners are handed rest on approved words or on a machine's inference. In the run measured on 1 September 2026, 135 of 177 sites returned enough for a machine to score at all.

A woman opens a letter about a screening result she does not understand and asks an assistant what it means. A junior doctor, mid-shift, checks a contraindication against the clock. A carer wants to know whether two medicines can safely be taken together before the pharmacy shuts. None of them opens ten tabs any longer. They ask one question in plain language and act on the single answer they are handed.

That answer is assembled from whatever the machine could read on the relevant organisation's own site. Where the site is legible, the engine has your own approved words to build from. Where it is not, the engine does not stop to check; it infers, and the inference is what the person carries away.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading healthcare and pharmaceuticals organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 177 home pages we approached, 42 could not be read by a machine at all: 23 refused an automated reader, 14 gave it no response and 5 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 135 a machine could read, 5 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Hologic at 76, with Biocon next at 72. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 135 of the 177 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 5 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 135 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 76. 5 scored 70 or above, 38 sat between 55 and 69, 45 between 40 and 54, and 47 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 13, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

A wrong answer here does not stay with one person

In most sectors a site a machine cannot parse simply loses an enquiry. In this field the cost is different in kind. The engine fills the gap from a forum, an old cache or a competitor, and the version it settles on is repeated to the next person who asks, and the one after that. An approved use quietly widens. A caution that mattered is dropped for brevity. A regulated indication is paraphrased into something looser than the label allows.

Across the sites a machine could read, the median Crane Index score was 43 out of 100. The composite tells only part of the story. What should worry a board most is the single read that governs whether the machine has your own words to quote at all, and in this cohort that read is the weakest by a wide margin.

The read that fails is the one that says who you are

The Crane Index runs three separate checks. The first asks whether a machine can find and reach the site; the second, whether an automated agent can act on what it finds; the third, Brand Representation, asks the plainest question of all: can a machine confirm, from your own pages, who you are, what you make and which claims are approved? On the first two this field holds up. It is the third that gives way. Agent Readiness was the strongest of the three, at a median of 65 out of 100, while Brand Representation was the weakest by a distance, at a median of just 13.

Read those two together and the picture is uncomfortable. The engines can very often get to a healthcare site. What they cannot reliably do is confirm, from the site itself, the facts that make an answer safe. A pharmaceutical group whose identity is scattered across brands, regions and regulatory territories offers a machine nothing single to trust. Prescribing detail sits behind a professional portal a reader cannot enter. Indications and cautions live in a downloadable PDF a fetcher will not open, or on a page that renders only once a script has run. None of this reflects the quality of the medicine or the care, only how legible the organisation is to software, and legibility can be measured. Hologic leads the field at 76, with Biocon next at 72, proof that a clean, machine-confirmable identity is achievable in exactly this regulated setting.

Reachable, yet not confirmable: the shape of the field

The readable sites ran from 21 to 76 on the Crane Index. 5 cleared the Strong band of 70, while 92 of them scored below 55, the level at which an engine is already liable to assemble your answer from somewhere other than you. Beyond the readable field sat 42 sites a machine could not enter at all: 23 refused an automated reader, 14 returned nothing, and 5 served pages that do not exist until scripts run. Those are reported as unmeasured, never scored as zero, because an unreadable site is not the same as a weak one. It is a site an engine must talk about without ever having read it.

The correction is small; the duty of care is not

The remedy is rarely a rebuild, which is the part boards tend to get wrong. It is valid Organization and Product structured data on the pages that carry your treatments, indications and cautions; one legal identity rendered identically across every brand and territory; and the clinical facts a reader needs written in plain text a fetcher can reach, rather than sealed inside a portal or a PDF. Done properly this is the single fastest lift, because it hands the engine precise, approved language instead of leaving it to guess.
