Before a client instructs a solicitor, many now describe the dispute, the deadline and the sum at stake to an AI assistant and ask which firms handle this kind of work. The names it answers with become the client's shortlist, and it can only name a firm whose website it can read. In the Crane Index™ run measured on 1 September 2026, 133 of the 171 leading UK legal businesses put to three independent scans returned a page an engine could assess.

That answer is the first legal opinion given in the matter, formed by software from public pages before any solicitor knows the enquiry exists. The three scans behind this benchmark measure the readability that decides it: whether an engine can find a firm, act on its pages and confirm what it does. A practice whose pages a machine cannot confidently read is absent from the shortlist, however strong its lawyers.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading legal services organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 171 home pages we approached, 38 could not be read by a machine at all: 24 refused an automated reader, 14 gave it no response. Of the 133 a machine could read, 2 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by LegalZoom at 79, with Keystone Law next at 73. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 133 of the 171 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 2 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 133 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 23 to 79. 2 scored 70 or above, 38 sat between 55 and 69, 63 between 40 and 54, and 30 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 19, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

A machine does not shortlist a middling law firm

An assistant building a shortlist reaches for the firms it can read most confidently, and the centre of this field gives it no reason to prefer one firm over another. Only 38 of the sites could not be read at all, whether because they turn an automated fetcher away or leave it looking at a page that never fills in. The quieter and costlier finding is the middle. The median firm scores 46 on the Crane Index, and 63 sites land in the single band between 40 and 54. Counting everything below 55, 93 firms read as legible but unremarkable to a machine. Only 2 cleared the Strong band of 70, and the scores run from 23 to 79. Legible but ordinary carries its own quiet penalty, because the middle of a field this even is where a recommendation is never made.

The authority a firm must prove before a machine will quote it

An engine will not put a firm's name into legal advice on the strength of a homepage. It wants to confirm who the practice is, what it is regulated to do and which specialisms it can genuinely claim, and it looks for that confirmation in the machine-readable identity of the site. That is what the Crane Index calls representation, and it is how AI search decides whom to name. Across the legal cohort the median firm scores 19 on it.

Where a firm sets out its regulated identity, its practice areas and its named people in structured data an engine can lift without guessing, it becomes quotable. Where those facts live only in a directory page built for a person to click through, the engine sees a plausible law firm it cannot vouch for, and it declines to name what it cannot stand behind. LegalZoom leads this month at 79 and it leads by being unambiguous about exactly these things, so a machine repeats it.

A half-read firm invites a guessed answer about the law

When an engine cannot cleanly parse which practice areas a firm actually holds, it fills the gap with an inference rather than falling silent. For most industries a half-read site produces a missed enquiry, costly enough on its own. In law the stakes are sharper, because the machine is answering a question about someone's legal position, and it will answer whether or not it read you well. It may attach the wrong specialism to your name, send a matter you would have won to a firm that does not do that work, or state a point of law with a confidence the underlying pages never earned.

The Crane Index measures this exposure across three separate reads. In the legal cohort the Brand Representation read is the weakest at a median of 19, against 63 for the Agent Readiness read. That gap is the exposure in plain sight: a machine can often reach a firm's pages yet struggle to confirm from them who the firm is and what it is entitled to claim, and the person acting on the answer cannot tell an inference from a fact.

What a legible firm looks like to a machine

The remedy is rarely a rebuilt website, and it never touches the design a client sees. It is valid Organization, LegalService and Person structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, placed on the pages that carry your practice areas and your partners; one regulated identity rendered the same way across every office; and the credentials and panel appointments written out where a fetcher can reach them rather than sealed inside a PDF. This is ordinary technical SEO applied to how a firm is read by an assistant rather than by a traditional search engine, and it is the difference between a site an engine can quote and one it merely tolerates.
