Someone deciding what to watch tonight, which novel to start, or where a series streams increasingly does not open a listings grid or a front page. They ask an assistant, in plain words, for a recommendation, and they take the answer it gives. That answer is assembled from the media sites the machine could actually read on its way to replying. The Crane Index measures how much of your catalogue, your credits and your ownership an engine can reach, and in the run dated 1 September 2026 it scored 124 of the 172 broadcasters, publishers, studios and labels we put to it.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading media and entertainment organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 172 home pages we approached, 48 could not be read by a machine at all: 25 refused an automated reader, 12 gave it no response and 11 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 124 a machine could read, 3 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Nintendo at 76, with Pan Macmillan next at 72. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 124 of the 172 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 3 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 124 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 76. 3 scored 70 or above, 29 sat between 55 and 69, 42 between 40 and 54, and 50 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 13, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The catalogue that arrives blank

The plainest failure in this run sits with the 48 sites that could not be read at all, and 11 of those were turned away by the same fault: the page renders nothing until a browser has run its scripts. A person waits a half-second and watches the catalogue appear. A machine fetching the page is handed an all but empty document and moves on. It is a peculiarly media affliction, because so many players, listings and title pages in this sector are built as apps that paint themselves after the fact. The work behind them may be first-rate. To the engine assembling a recommendation, the site simply was not there.

A shortlist built only from what could be read

An assistant does not pause to note what it failed to load. It answers from what it reached, and fills the rest with an inference. A title sealed inside a script-rendered player rarely ranks below a cleaner rival. More often it drops out of the sentence entirely, or is credited to whichever name the engine could parse nearby.

The measured figures say how much of the sector that covers. Across this cohort the middle site scores 42 on the Crane Index, with a median of 47 on whether an engine can find and place a title and 13 on whether it can confirm who made it. 50 of the measured sites sit below 40, the band where a machine can neither place a work nor vouch for its maker, and 92 fall below 55. On those numbers most of the sector's catalogue is being paraphrased by a machine rather than quoted from the source. For a business whose whole product is attention, that is audience, advertiser interest and credit for the work quietly going to a rival the engine happened to read more cleanly.

Where the field reads cleanest

The picture is not uniformly bleak, and the top of it is worth naming. Nintendo reads cleanest of all, leading the field on 76 by Crane Index. 3 cleared the Strong band of 70, and scores in this run ran from 21 to 76, a spread that reflects how a page is built far more than the calibre of its programming. The cohort reads strongest on Agent Readiness, where the middle site reaches 63, and weakest on Brand Representation at 13. The pages to make legible first

The remedy is seldom a rebuild. The highest-value change for a media site is to serve the title, listing and credit pages as readable HTML rather than an empty shell a script fills in later, so the machine reaches the same catalogue a reader does. Add valid structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, to the pages that carry your titles, credits and where a work can be watched or bought. And state one legal identity for the group and its imprints, labels and production arms, worded identically on every page, so the engine settles who owns what instead of guessing. Those are the moves that lift the three reads an AI answer is built from, and the method behind them is set out in full.
