Type a question about broadband, mobile or business connectivity into an AI assistant and something revealing happens to the biggest names in telecoms. The machine can usually reach their websites. What it struggles to do is say who it has reached. Across the 134 UK providers a machine could read in the run measured on 1 September 2026, the strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness, at a median of 63, meaning an automated agent can generally get to the page and act on it. The weakest by a wide margin was Brand Representation, at a median of 15: a machine can arrive at the site and still not confirm from it who the company is.

For an industry whose brands are household names, that is the finding that should sting. The recognition lives in the advertising and the airtime, while the page itself gives a machine almost nothing to verify it with.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading telecommunications organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 184 home pages we approached, 50 could not be read by a machine at all: 22 refused an automated reader, 19 gave it no response and 9 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 134 a machine could read, 7 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Wessex Internet at 78, with Windstream next at 76. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 134 of the 184 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 7 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 134 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 21 to 78. 7 scored 70 or above, 40 sat between 55 and 69, 37 between 40 and 54, and 50 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 15, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

Invisible by choice: the 50 locked doors ↓

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The brand a machine cannot name

Telecoms is built on brand and trust. A household picking a provider, a finance director signing a connectivity contract, each is choosing who to rely on for a service they cannot hold in their hand. When that choice moves inside an assistant, the engine has to answer one question before any comparison begins: who is this? On a Brand Representation median of 15, most of these sites give it very little to work with. The corporate identity, the trading names, the link between the consumer arm and the business arm live in the logo and the page design, which a machine does not read, rather than in the structured, plain-text form it does. The result is a set of famous brands the public would name in a heartbeat that a machine, reading the site cold, cannot place.

A field weighted to the bottom

Recognition is only the start of it, because the scores themselves sit low. The median telecoms provider reaches 43 on the Crane Index, and the field leans towards the weak end. 7 providers cleared the Strong band of 70, led by Wessex Internet on 78, with Windstream close behind on 76. Beneath that handful the field falls away: 87 of the 134 readable providers score below 55, where a page gives an assistant too little to quote with confidence. The distance from the top of this table down to its middle, from 78 to a median of 43, is the room a legible provider has to pull clear of the field.

Where the reading breaks

Of the 184 provider sites we approached, 50 could not be read by a machine at all. 22 refused the automated reader outright, 19 returned all but nothing, and 9 loaded their commercial detail through script that a machine never runs. A provider in that group does not appear in the comparison at all, and a shortlist a buyer never sees cannot be won. Among the sites that could be read, the same habits pull the scores down. Coverage sits behind a postcode checker a machine will not complete, so the one fact a switcher most wants stays hidden. Tariffs, allowances and contract terms live inside a plan-builder that renders only after a human clicks, so the AI search engine reading the raw page finds a shell. Promotional pricing arrives by script, so the headline offer that would win the answer never reaches the model. None of this reflects the quality of the network. It measures how legible the offer is, which is what this Crane Index benchmark scores and what the methodology sets out in full.

The climb is shorter than it looks

The reassuring part is how modest the fixes are. Valid Organization markup, the structured statement of who a company is that engines rely on, and one clear legal identity, rendered identically across the consumer, business and wholesale sites, would answer the identity question the weakest read exposes. Coverage and pricing written into the page as plain text a machine can read, rather than locked inside a checker or a plan-builder, would lift the many scores sitting below 55. This is ordinary technical SEO discipline pointed at a new kind of reader, and it moves a telecoms site from the tail into the group an assistant will quote.
