This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read the websites of the UK's energy and utility suppliers: whether a machine asked to recommend a supplier can find the tariffs, act on what it finds and confirm who published it. In the run measured on 1 September 2026, 117 of the 175 energy and utility sites tracked returned enough for a machine to score at all, and the median site scored 42 on the Crane Index.

Why it matters is the shape of this market. A household stuck on a standard variable tariff, or a factory manager weighing a fixed two-year contract, used to reach for a comparison table and read it column by column. More of them now begin by asking an assistant which supplier to move to. Energy is a low-loyalty market, and the reply that comes back in a single sentence is often the whole of the decision. That reply is assembled from what a machine can read on a supplier's own website, and a supplier whose site it cannot parse gives it nothing to build with.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading energy and utilities organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 175 home pages we approached, 58 could not be read by a machine at all: 33 refused an automated reader, 21 gave it no response and 4 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 117 a machine could read, 6 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by OVO Energy at 78, with Octopus Energy next at 74. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 117 of the 175 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 6 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 117 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 20 to 78. 6 scored 70 or above, 20 sat between 55 and 69, 49 between 40 and 54, and 42 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 13, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. One fair caveat, stated plainly: a site that verifies crawlers by network may admit engines it recognises while refusing ours, so they are reported as unmeasured, never scored. But a door bolted against unknown machines is a posture, and it is one the machines now bringing buyers will meet first.

The shortlist is settled before anyone clicks

When someone asks an assistant to compare suppliers, they rarely challenge the shortlist it produces. The names that appear are treated as the market; the names left out go unweighed, because they were never seen. Competitive rates do not help if a machine cannot see them, and what decides how much of a supplier it sees is how cleanly it can read the site. On 1 September 2026 the field ran from 20 to 78, and 6 sites cleared the Strong band of 70. A supplier scoring low on that scale hands the assistant little it can quote, and an assistant with little to quote leans on whichever rival published more plainly.

The tariff a machine cannot find

The tariff on many energy sites sits exactly where an automated reader cannot follow it, and that habit, not the quality of the supply, is why so many read thinly. Unit rates and standing charges live inside a quote calculator that only draws for a human. Price guarantees sit in a PDF a machine will not open. Domestic and business offers are split across separate sub-sites, so an engine finds no single identity to trust. None of this reflects the price on offer, only whether the price can be reached, which is exactly what our three reads test: whether an engine can find you, act on what it finds, and confirm who you are.

The hardest end of that problem is total. Of the 175 names in this benchmark, 58 could not be read at all: 33 refused the automated request outright, 21 returned nothing a machine could use, and 4 buried their content behind scripts that never resolved. A refused or empty page is the plainest form of AI search invisibility. The assistant moves to the next supplier without pausing, and the switch goes with it.

The leaders show what a clean read looks like

OVO Energy led the field at 78, with Octopus Energy close behind, proof that a supplier site can be made legible to a machine without a rebuild. Below the leaders the distribution tells the harder story: 91 sites came in below 55, the band where an assistant is guessing more than it is quoting. Across the three reads the strongest was Agent Readiness, at a median of 65, and the weakest was Brand Representation, at 13. A tariff read that thinly is likely to be inferred rather than quoted, and an inferred unit rate repeated to every household that asks is a risk no regulated supplier would choose to carry.

Becoming the supplier the answer names

The remedy is modest and mostly technical. Three moves lift an energy site fastest. Put valid structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on the pages that carry your tariffs and terms, so a reader takes the unit rate and the standing charge without having to run a quote tool. And write the rates and guarantees where a machine can reach them rather than sealing them inside a calculator or a PDF, since a page an engine cannot open scores nothing at all.
