This benchmark measures how cleanly AI engines read the websites of Britain's banks, insurers, asset managers and building societies, and whether an assistant can state each firm's products, rates and terms correctly. In the run measured on 1 September 2026, 119 of the 175 financial services sites approached returned enough for a machine to score at all. Financial services AI visibility starts there: an assistant can only quote the firms it can read.

A saver puts a plain question to an assistant. Which cash ISA pays the most right now, which business account suits a sole trader, which insurer will cover a leasehold flat. The machine answers in a sentence or two, names two or three providers, and attaches a figure to each. The person acts on that. No results page, no comparison table, no visit to your website. The shortlist for their money, and the number stuck to your name, is settled before you know the question was ever asked.

In a regulated market that carries a cost most boards have never priced. When an engine cannot reach your live rate or your real terms, it fills the gap with whatever it last read elsewhere. An invented rate or an imagined exclusion, repeated confidently to everyone who asks, is worse than silence.

On 1 September 2026 we ran the leading financial services organisations through the Crane Index^™, our three-scanner AI Visibility Suite. Of the 175 home pages we approached, 56 could not be read by a machine at all: 28 refused an automated reader, 23 gave it no response and 5 serve pages that do not exist until scripts run. Of the 119 a machine could read, 6 cleared 70 out of 100, and the field is led by Fidelity Investments at 76, with BlackRock next at 73. Every figure here is a first-party measurement, the full dated result set is archived, and we re-run the scan and report the movement.

The sixty-second read

▸The finding: 119 of the 175 sites we approached could be read by a machine, and 6 of them cleared 70 out of 100 on the Crane Index.
▸The money: when a buyer asks an engine to shortlist suppliers, an illegible site is simply not on the list. The demand does not vanish, it goes to a legible competitor free, while your paid channels buy it back at a rising cost per acquisition.
▸The pattern to watch: in the two flagship studies, the FTSE 100 and the UK's biggest online retailers, one mechanical habit separated the top of the field from the bottom, valid structured data and one identity a machine can resolve. That is a markup sprint, not a rebuild, so a median can move faster than a board expects.

Across the 119 readable sites the Crane Index ran from 19 to 76. 6 scored 70 or above, 26 sat between 55 and 69, 47 between 40 and 54, and 40 below 40. The strongest of the three reads was Agent Readiness at a median of 63, and the weakest was Brand Representation at 15, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are.

These names have no score for a sharper reason: their sites would not let a machine reader in at all. They refused it outright, gave it nothing, or serve pages that are empty until scripts run, and the crawlers and shopping agents AI engines send live in the same data centres our reader does. The price a wrong number carries in a regulated market

The price is a customer acting on a figure you never published, and most of this field is exposed to it. Money sites bury their most important facts by habit, and the machines pay them back in kind: the median site landed at 44 on the Crane Index, 87 sites sat below 55, and only 6 cleared the Strong band of 70. The spread runs from 19 to 76, so the gap between the firms a machine quotes cleanly and the ones it guesses at is already wide.

The blocked firms tell the sharper story. 56 of the sites we approached could not be scored at all, and the causes are specific to how financial pages are built. 28 refused the automated request outright. 23 returned a page with nothing an engine could use, the rate rendering only for a human eye. 5 kept their live figures locked inside a calculator or script a fetcher will not run. Every one of them is a firm an assistant cannot quote, so it quotes a competitor instead, or repeats a stale number scraped from somewhere else and presents it as fact.

A machine must settle which firm you are before it quotes your rate

Accuracy on money starts with identity. Before an engine attaches a rate to a name it has to be certain which institution it is reading, and a group with a dozen sub-brands, a holding company and a trading name that never resolves to one legal identity gives it nothing firm to hold. That is where this cohort separates. The median retrieval read sits at 52, a fair way above the composite of 44, which says most of these firms can be reached but far fewer can be understood and confirmed once reached. Across the three reads the field is strongest on Agent Readiness, whether an automated agent can reach and act on the site, at a median of 63, and weakest on Brand Representation, whether a machine can confirm from your own site who you are, at 15. It is that weaker read that decides whether a machine names you or someone else.

Fidelity Investments leads the field at 76, and the reason is plain: a site an engine can move through, a single resolvable identity it can attach trust to, and product facts it can read and repeat without inventing anything. When an assistant is asked to compare providers, that is the firm it reaches for, because reaching for it is safe.

The work that gets a financial brand quoted correctly

The fix is rarely a rebuild, and it costs less than the trust lost to a misquote. Put valid Organization and Product structured data, the machine-readable labelling engines rely on, on the pages that carry your rates and terms. Render one legal identity, worded the same way, on every page you publish. And place the commercial facts a customer needs where a machine can read them, not sealed behind a login or inside a script it will not run.
